Krause Ehlers
Principal Engineer, Pyrometallurgy Division, Mintek
Krause started his career in metallurgy as a physical metallurgical
technician in 1974 at Corner House Engineering Laboratories, and worked
for 2 years at Valindaba doing non-destructive testing contract work.
In 1976, he joined Mintek and, during training, worked in the Projects
division doing laboratory and pilot plant work in both hydro and
pyrometallurgy. After obtaining his National Diploma in Extraction
Metallurgy from Wits Technicon, he joined Johannesburg Consolidated
Investment (JCI) at the Minerals Processing Research Laboratories (MPRL)
in 1980. As a result of JCI unbundling, MPRL changed to Amplats Research
Centre where Krause worked until joining Mintek in January 1998. Krause
has many years experience in pyrometallurgical research and was involved
in the following projects:
- Pilot-plant trials to smelt and convert various platinum group
metal concentrates and residues
- Production of magnesium from ferrochrome slag in a pilot plant
- Recovery of cobalt, base metals, and platinum group metals from
converter slag
- Testing various refractory materials under simulated plant conditions
- Pelletizing and testing of various concentrates, leach residues, and
ashed products for arc furnace feed material
- Expansion and upgrading of the Waterval smelting circuit
- Development of the Flash Oxidation Smelting (Foxsmelt) process
- Smelting of various concentrates, residues, and recovery of metal
values from slags using the Foxsmelt process
- Flash converting of nickel/copper matte and leach residues in the
Foxsmelt reactor
- Incineration of platinum group metal-containing grease
- Incineration and smelting of nickel obtained from hyper accumulating
plants
His publications to date, for which he has been investigator and author,
include 22 internal pyrometallurgical reports, 3 contract reports and the
Foxsmelt patent as co-inventor.
